Every morning, when I turn on my computer with a coffee in hand, two pages automatically open for me: X (née Twitter) and Substack.
It's my way of starting the day on social media. Entering the X page feels like walking into a massive café where a brawl is happening at every table and between tables. The patrons are fighting, spitting, smashing bottles over each other's heads, and somehow expect me to join in. Occasionally, someone disappears entirely, tossed out by the café's burly staff.
When I open Substack, it feels like stepping into a quiet café where everyone is engrossed in their laptops, phones, or books. The chairs are cozy, there are plants scattered around, and soft ambient music fills the air.
Every now and then, someone calls out, “New customer with only ten coffees under their belt, care to share a cup with me?” “If you drink your coffee with me, I will drink my coffee with you“. It’s not intrusive—just slightly silly.
It’s a calm, peaceful café where new patrons appear daily.
I’ll admit, I still pop into the Twitter café occasionally for a cheap dopamine hit, just to see who’s fighting who. But these days, the place where I consistently enjoy my morning coffee is the Substack café.
Where do you drink your morning social media coffee?
